ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs Google AI Overviews: how each picks sources

The three biggest AI answer surfaces choose sources differently. Here's how each one decides who gets cited, and what that means for your brand.

By Nahuel Soria

ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews all answer questions by naming sources, but they choose those sources differently. ChatGPT draws on a wide range of trusted content and web search. Perplexity always cites live, retrieval-grounded links. Google AI Overviews correlate closely with traditional search rankings. Optimizing for all three means covering all three behaviors.

If you only optimize for one, you win one surface and stay invisible on the others. Here is how each decides who to cite.

How ChatGPT picks sources

ChatGPT leans on content it has learned to trust, plus live web search when enabled. It draws from a wider pool than just the top-ranked page, which is why a well-structured page ranking on page two can still be cited.

What it favors: clear, extractable answers, independent proof like reviews and forum discussion, and brands that appear consistently across the web rather than only on their own domain. Third-party mentions carry real weight here.

How Perplexity picks sources

Perplexity is the most transparent of the three because it always shows its citations as live links. It runs real retrieval on each query, so freshness and clear structure matter more than on surfaces that rely mainly on training data.

What it favors: recent, well-structured, authoritative pages it can retrieve and quote directly. Because every answer carries visible sources, being one of those linked citations is the whole game.

How Google AI Overviews pick sources

Google AI Overviews are rooted in Google's core Search ranking. Google's own guidance is explicit: there is no special markup or separate "AI content" needed, and the best practices for Search continue to apply. [FUENTE: url a la guía oficial de Google sobre optimización para AI features].

What it favors: the same things strong SEO always has. Helpful, people-first content, solid E-E-A-T, original information, clean indexability, and semantic HTML. If you rank well and demonstrate real expertise, you are already in the running.

The one behavior they share

All three reward the same underlying qualities, just weighted differently: content a machine can extract cleanly, and a brand the web independently vouches for. Structure serves every surface. Proof serves every surface. The differences are in emphasis, not direction.

That is why the advice does not fork into three incompatible playbooks. Write extractable answer blocks, publish honest comparison content, and build third-party proof, and you are optimizing for all three at once.

Where they differ, and what to do about it

For ChatGPT: invest in distributed proof. Reviews, roundups, and genuine community presence matter because it synthesizes across many sources.

For Perplexity: invest in freshness and structure. Keep pages current and clearly organized so they are easy to retrieve and quote, and worth linking.

For Google AI Overviews: invest in SEO fundamentals and E-E-A-T. Strong rankings and demonstrated expertise are the entry ticket, because the Overview is built on core Search.

What this means for measuring visibility

Because the three surfaces choose sources differently, checking only one gives you a misleading read. A brand can be cited by Perplexity and absent from ChatGPT, or vice versa. Measuring across multiple models is the only way to see your real position. That is the approach behind our methodology: query several providers, run each prompt multiple times, and separate what is estimated from what is observed.
