How to get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity

AI assistants recommend brands with extractable content and independent proof. Here are the concrete steps to become one of them.

By Nahuel Soria

To get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, structure your content so a model can extract a clean answer, and build enough independent proof that the model trusts naming you. In practice that means clear answer blocks, comparison pages, and a presence on the review sites and communities these assistants lean on.

Getting cited is not the same as ranking. A page that ranks on page two of Google can still be cited in an AI answer if it is well-structured and trustworthy. Here is how to earn that.

Make your content extractable

AI systems pull passages, not whole pages. Every key claim should stand on its own without the surrounding context.

Lead with the answer. Start each section with a direct, self-contained statement before you explain it. Buried answers get skipped.

Keep answer blocks short. A 40 to 60 word passage is the sweet spot for extraction. Long enough to be complete, short enough to quote whole.

Use headings that match real questions. Phrase your H2s and H3s the way buyers actually ask, like "how much does X cost" instead of "pricing."

Structure comparisons clearly. For "X vs Y" questions, lay out each option's strengths and who it suits. Comparison content is one of the most cited formats. [VERIFICAR: share de citas que capturan las comparativas, con FUENTE: url].

Build the proof AI systems trust

Structure gets you extractable. Proof gets you recommended. Models are cautious about naming a brand that exists only on its own website.

Get reviews on the sites AI cites. G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot are frequently referenced for buyer-intent queries. Genuine reviews here are among the highest-leverage moves a SaaS brand can make.

Earn a real presence in communities. Assistants lean heavily on Reddit and similar forums for candid opinion. It has to be authentic participation, not astroturf, which these systems increasingly detect.

Get into roundups. "Best [category] tools" articles on respected publications are often quoted close to verbatim by AI systems.

Cite your own sources. Content that references authoritative data and links out is treated as more trustworthy. Add specific numbers with sources rather than vague claims. [FUENTE: url para cada estadística que agregues].

Keep AI crawlers able to reach you

None of this works if the assistants cannot read your site.

  • Allow AI bots in robots.txt. Blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot means those platforms cannot cite you.
  • Render content without heavy JavaScript. If the page is blank until several frameworks finish loading, a crawler sees blank.
  • Show pricing and specs on a public page. Anything a buyer needs to decide should be readable without a login wall.

A note on freshness

AI systems weight recency. Undated content loses to dated content on the same topic. Show a clear "last updated" date, and refresh your most competitive pages on a regular cadence so they keep signaling that they are current.

What not to do

Do not write separate content "for AI." The same page should serve people and models. Content written to game an algorithm reads like it, and it does not get cited or convert.

Do not keyword-stuff. Unlike traditional SEO, where stuffing is merely ineffective, it can actively reduce AI visibility. [VERIFICAR: dato del estudio GEO de Princeton sobre keyword stuffing, con FUENTE: url].

Do not chase fake mentions. Fabricated citations and spammed forum posts are the kind of signal these systems are built to discount.

The short version

Write extractable answer blocks, publish honest comparison pages, earn independent proof on the sites and communities AI trusts, and keep your pages crawlable and current. Do that consistently and you move from invisible to one of the two or three brands the assistant names.
