GEO vs SEO

SEO is the practice of getting a page to rank in a list of search results, and GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the practice of getting a brand used and named inside the answer a model writes. The work overlaps because generative engines read the same pages search engines rank, but the unit of success is different: a position in a list versus a mention in a paragraph.

What each one optimizes for

SEO optimizes for a position. A page can rank fourth, get fewer clicks than the first result, and still earn traffic every day, because the list keeps going and the user decides how far down to read.

GEO optimizes for inclusion. When an assistant answers "which tools should I look at", it names two or three and stops. There is no fourth position and no second page. A brand that is not in that sentence is not on the shortlist, no matter how well its pages rank in Google for the same question.

What carries over

Most of the foundation is shared. Pages that a crawler can read, questions answered plainly in the words buyers use, and a consistent description of the product across third-party sites all help in both. A site with broken structure or thin pages does badly at both jobs, and no amount of GEO tactics fixes it.

What changes

Three things change. Comparison and alternative pages carry more weight, because the questions people bring to an assistant are decision questions rather than research questions. Sources outside the brand's own domain count more, since a model writes one answer by drawing across many pages instead of ranking one of them. And the answer is not stable: the same question asked twice can name a different set of brands, which means a single observation proves very little.

Why they need different measurement

A rank tracker cannot answer the GEO question, because a generated answer has no positions to read. The only way to know is to ask the question and count what comes back, more than once. LLM Audit sends a brand's buyer questions to 2 model APIs, repeats each question 3 times per provider, and reports counts with their total rather than a single score, because a score hides how much the answers moved between runs.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. The pages that rank in search are usually the pages generative engines read, so the technical and editorial work is shared. What GEO adds is a different goal and a different measurement on top of that foundation.

Can I measure GEO with my rank tracker?

No. A generated answer has no ranking positions in it, so there is nothing for a tracker to read. Measuring means asking the buyer questions directly, repeating them, and counting how often the brand is named.

Where should a small team start?

Start with one measurement, before writing anything. Knowing which buyer questions already name the brand, and which name a competitor instead, tells a team which pages are worth the effort and which would be written blind.
